Project summary

Ethiopia faces severe water scarcity due to recurrent droughts and the impacts of climate change, which disrupt groundwater recharge and degrade water quality. With groundwater providing the majority of domestic, industrial, and agricultural water supply, addressing these challenges is critical. This project aims to implement Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) as a cost-effective and sustainable solution to enhance water availability, mitigate flood risks, and improve climate resilience. MAR stores excess water in aquifers for use during dry periods, offering benefits such as reduced water conflicts, improved water quality, and ecosystem support.

Led by Ethiopia's Ministry of Water and Energy (MoWE) in partnership with BRGM, the project focuses on training local staff, assessing climate impacts on groundwater recharge, mapping MAR suitability, and conducting economic analyses for potential projects. These efforts will support Ethiopia’s National Adaptation Plan and strengthen institutional capacity for groundwater management. By integrating MAR into Ethiopia’s water resource strategy, the initiative lays the groundwork for sustainable water security and resilience against climate change.
